Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / motorcycle lubrificant
French term or phrase: (haute résistance au) cisaillement
dictionary tells me "cutting" for metal and "pruning" for plants or trees, but that hardly makes sense in this context about a lubrificant. Any help appreciated.

Shear strength
Shear strength is the maximum shear stress that is possible to transmit through a grease without the onset of grease flow. Grease being a semi-solid material can transmit a shear stress also with the shear strain rate zero. The shear strain rate zero grease can be kept on different surfaces of bearings and housings. This is an important parameter when pumping greases through pipes in a centralised lubricating system.

Shear stability
The ability of a lubricating grease to resist the changes in consistency during mechanical working. The working may be a result of either laboratory tests or in actual service. This is also called mechanical stability.

Absolute viscosity is typically measured by a rotary viscometers to determine the torque on rotating spindle and so measure the fluid's shear resistance. Changing the rotor (spindle) dimensions and the gap between the rotor and stator wall (container) and the speed of rotation can change the rate of shear.

agree  Maria Karra: From personal experience, resistance is perfectly fine too, but we use shear _strength_ more frequently in the field
