French term or phrase: achats passage à quai
Hello,

Can anyone help me with this term? Here's the context :

"L’outil devra permettre de récupérer les unités d’œuvre (colis, poids, contenants etc..) afin de valoriser, soit quotidiennement, soit mensuellement les achats de passage à quai."

"Passage à quai" is "cross-docking", but I have never seen it linked to the idea of purchasing or procurement in this way. It is followed by a section entitled "achats distribution", which I am also having difficulty with, but which provides a contrast which may help to understand the meaning (?)...

Thanks in advance,
Dana

xxxCMJ_Trans: 7:46am Aug 13, 2007: is it simply purchase of services connected with a) cross-docking; b) distribution? After all, every service has a price tag
Dana Pottratz: 7:50am Aug 13, 2007: Yes, but... - How would I say that in English then? I googled "cross-docking purchase, procurement, etc." and none of them seem to exist in English. There must be a different way to say it, a paraphrase perhaps, but I can't find it...
xxxCMJ_Trans: 7:59am Aug 13, 2007: what is this "tool"? A program identifying individual containers, parcels....in order to establish monthly or daily the number involved in client cross-docking/distribution activities ? (unless it is "actes" and not "achats"?)
Dana Pottratz: 8:06am Aug 13, 2007: Yes. It's a new global software package they want to migrate to and which handles all their different transport management needs.

cross-dock purchases
Explanation:
They want to put a value on (valoriser) these things, so even if goods only sit on the dock for a minute, they must be given a purchase price. There has to be a cost involved in cross-docking - you need the facility, the storage space, the staff, the handling equipment, etc. to start with - so there has to be a price. Presumably this new operation won't make any difference to their bottom line, but will simply give statistics on the cost-effectiveness/performance of a given logistics centre.

Just as it makes no difference to my life to know the value of goods that pass through my fridge, it would be an interesting statistic. Especially if I were selling whatever I bought.
