Specific to the airline business. Flights on routes are shared between companies in 'strategic alliances' to ensure flights are not operated at a loss on 'thin' routes (ie. routes that support insufficient passengers to justify several different flights. Code-sharing agreements have to be approved with the governments of the countries concerned.
