Asker: what then is terrain?

Asker: I'm struggling with the "longitudinal". Wouldn't that be "coupe transversale"? Would this be "cross section perpendicular to the ground" or something along those line. Your answer has helped put me on the right tract, but not sure it's quite there

agree  B D Finch: To answer the Asker's query: the "terrain" is the land that the cross-section is through. Not "simply the levels" though, as these are generally shown on plan.

  -> Thanks: yes, my levels commentw as not very exact. Forget it.

agree  xxxBourth: Not necessarily longitudinal, just "cross section", though this does imply a geological cross-section of the site (at depth anyway) rather than just a surface profile which is what I imagine they mean.
