French term or phrase:allège non accouplée
An assistant station manager is responsible for monitoring platforms and part of this responsibility includes "manoeuvre IOT (indicateurs d'operations terminees) aux trains avec allege non accouplee". There should be an 'accent grave' on 'allege' but unfortunately, symbols get completely distorted when I preview the question. Is anyone at proz able to resolve this issue please, which I have been experiencing for a while now?
Thanks very much! I agree that this definitely does not seem to be a travelling post office, on which post is sorted. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
I have French and English keyboard layouts installed in Windows and use hot key combinations to switch between them. That way you can use a French (AZERTY) layout on an English (QWERTY) keyboard and vice versa.

A Travelling Post Office (TPO) is a type of mail train where the post is sorted en-route. TPO is a UK term. In the USA, the equivalent is Railway Post Office (RPO). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_Post_Office
In the United States a railway post office, commonly abbreviated as RPO, was a railroad car that was normally operated in passenger service as a means to sort mail en route, in order to speed delivery. The RPO was staffed by highly trained Railway Mail Service postal clerks, and was off-limits to the passengers on the train. In the UK, the equivalent term was Travelling Post Office (TPO). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_post_office

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks very much for your answer Johannes! However, I decided to use "mail van", as per the wikipedia link which you yourself provide, which includes the key piece of information "sans travail effectué durant le trajet, contrairement au bureau ambulant".
