These are sub-urban trains, so very similar to the Metro. Kashew's 'double' is up for 'grabs' at the moment unless there is another rail specific term.

suburban mass-transit train (RER etc.) or long-haul passenger train. I don't think the latter would have vertical bars in the centre of the "lobby" area. The triple (or double) arrangement I described could be likened to a tree coming out of the floor and dividing into branches - only the branches unite to form a "trunk" again at the top.

triple vertical hand grabs to be found on some Paris metros? In the middle of the open area just inside the door? In days of yore it could sometimes be hard to grab a bar without clamping your hand down on someone else's. Multiple bars are the answer. From memory there is a single "stub" top and bottom, fixed to the floor and roof, then each stub divides into 3 vertical bars in a triangular arrangement which - fortunately - meet in the middle ;-) .

Please could you explan in what form of transport these 'passenger compartments' actually are? There may be a term more specific to one form of transportation than another, for example.
