French term or phrase:à l'arrêt du signal
This is from a piece of Belgian Legislation implementing a European Directive on railway safety. It is an entry in a table entitled "Categories of accidents", in the subsection "other".
Here is the complete entry:
"Dépassements de signal suite à:
- la remise intempestive à l'arrêt du signal
- la retombée intempestive à l'arrêt du signal
- d'autres causes (signaux passés en situation de danger)
I am having trouble getting my head around the first 2 entries in the list and would appreciate any input as regards the "à l'arrêt du signal".

You could translate it as 'accidents that happen at a signalled stop' , but this is the same as a 'stop signal' here

Notes to answerer
Asker: This was my original thought but then, surely that would be "signal d'arrêt" and not "à l'arrêt du signal"?
Explanation: "signal d'arrêt" (stop signal) has not the same meaning as "à l'arrêt du signal".
The signal can be a "warning signal", for example.
Could be helpful to know to what "retombée" and "remise" are refering to. I guess that they mean undesirable "end" and "start" of something, respectively.
Things continue to happen when a signal is exceeded ("Dépassement de signal") and even if it has been swiched off, this is my understanding.

Explanation: Considérons le seul sens de marche A, B, C, d'une ligne à double voie (fig. 113) et envisageons le poste de block intermédiaire B :
1. le signal d'arrêt s2 ne peut être mis au passage pour le train n° 2 que moyennant l'autorisation du poste d'aval C ;
2. le poste d'aval C ne peut donner lui-même cette autorisation que si le train précédent n° 1 a effectivement quitté la section BC ;
3. un train n° 2 qui franchit un poste de block B doit être couvert par la remise à l'arrêt du signal s2 avant qu'un autre train (n° 3) puisse être autorisé à pénétrer dans la section AB ;
4. une autorisation du poste C ne doit permettre au poste d'amont B de mettre son signal au passage qu'une seule fois.

Pour obvier à ce danger, un dispositif spécial provoque automatiquement la remise à l'arrêt du signal de block. A quelques mètres à l'aval du signal, on installe une «pédale de remise automatique à l'arrêt» qui fonctionne dès qu'elle a été foulée par le dernier essieu du train.
