French term or phrase: lutte raisonnée
Hi, I'm struggling to translate this paragraph, particularly the phrase "lutte raisonnée." It's from the description of a French winemaker. The phrase in context is below, at the end of the paragraph:

L’expérience acquise depuis la mise en place des vinifications séparées en 1997 nous a permise de vinifier cette année 28 000 hectolitres d’AOC Côtes de Provence avec une traçabilité complète de la parcelle à la bouteille. De plus la présence d'un technicien viticole chargé du suivi du vignoble de la mise en place de la lutte raisonnée et de la norme HACCP vient soutenir les actions que nous menons pour améliorer la qualité de nos vins.

I think it may be a term specific to winemaking, or maybe agriculture... Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Maybe purposive/soft agriculture

Explanation:
This is about "agriculture raisonnée", ie good agrciultral practices, ie quality agriculture with less chemicals added and less wasting, not necessarily "bio" farming though.
I guess "lutte" here stands for "control".

May refer specifically to pest management. Otherwise the word "lutte" here is not idiomatic at all, being a bad translation for "control".

neutral  Sara Freitas: Think "soft" is too broad, covering much more than pest control.

-> I agree "integrated/sustainable pest management" fits far better, even if there is no exact equivalent anyway.

agree  Sara Freitas: Absolutely, I was adding my note about integrated as you were posting yours!

agree  Bruon: More or less. Actually in FAO/Codex documents, "integrated pest management" is translated "intégré" though.
15 mins
-> Yes, I've seen both used, but I think intégré is probably the more literal French translation of integrated ... if you see what I mean!

agree  Katherine Mérignac: I like this - and intend to update my glossary...!

agree  xxxdf49f: maybe "integrated crop control" since that would cover both pest and diseases ?

sustainable pest control

Explanation:
Search "lutte raisonnée" + vin and you'll find lots of articles about what this is.

Or integrated pest control as seen here *and* on native-English-written wine-growing/agriculture sites

http://www.laudun-vignerons.com/ang/vineyard/index.htm

My concern with supervised control is that it is a poor translation that has been propagated by on-line glossaries and French wineries' Web sites. Most occurrences are in English translations of French wine-makers' sites whereas sustainable/integrated pest control actually seem to be used in the English-speaking world.

Lutte raisonnée (Supervised control) :
This technique limits treatment to the mere demands of the plant. The purpose is to produce a better wine and to be more environmentally minded.

Vine-growers are very aware of the issue of environmental protection. This is why they meet each week to keep a close check on their vineyards. This is referred to as supervised control.

'Lutte raisonnée' was apparently the precursor to 'lutte intégrée' - but integrated (pest) control is certainly another possibility and also gets my vote.

http://www.inra.fr/Internet/Produits/HYPPZ/ZGLOSS/3g---103.h...

Lutte raisonnée :

[R] Lutte où les moyens (essentiellement chimiques) de destruction des ravageurs ne sont employés *qu'à bon escient*, en cas de risque de dépassement du seuil de nuisibilité.
S'oppose à la lutte d'assurance, où les interventions sont déclenchées en fonction d'un calendrier ; préfigure la lutte intégrée.

Maybe someone should contact Cadiau, the author of LexiVin!

neutral  Sara Freitas: my concern with this term is that it is seen only in English translations of French wine sites. I found no native-English sources with the correct context that use this term
16 mins
-> I know what you mean - and I also prefer 'integrated control'. I know many translators use the Lexivin, which is generally very good, and this could well be why so many translations use the term 'supervised control'

Minimum use of pesticides

Explanation:
In practical terms this is what it means - i.e. somewhere in between pesticide intensive industrial agriculture and pure organic farming (which sometimes, while environmentally sustainable, is not financially sustainable).

environmental techniques

Explanation:
another suggestion, from site in French + English

http://www.michelpicard.com/fr/lutte-raisonnee.php

http://www.michelpicard.com/fr/lutte-raisonnee.php

environmental techniques
Throughout the whole wine-making process, from producing the grapes to turning them into wine, we use techniques that cause the least disturbance to natural balances and habitat, preserving terroir and environment. For ecological reasons, we work closely with research laboratories know as 'Modules de Prévention', whose task is to grow and monitor the development of these bacteria in a controlled area and warn us when they observe a development in these bacteria that may be harmful to our vineyards. We can then spray quickly and effectively, still with a concern to protect the vines against the diseases and pests that might compromise the production of healthy, high-quality grapes.

I like this: an eco-balanced approach

Today an eco-balanced approach, ‘la lutte raisonnée’ , controls disease and pests with the minimum of interference by artificial means, this helps protect the integrity not only of the vines but also their overall environment.

neutral  Sara Freitas: maybe "environmentally-friendly" but I feel this is too broad. This is about targeted, integrated, sustainable pest control rather than blitzing the entire vineyard with preventive doses of pestcides
6 mins
-> the above is a wine producers explanation of la lutte raisonnee, it doesn't mention blitzing.....although I agree that the title is maybe too broad
