it is the usual term in french used for a certain type
of company :

someone works as a freelancer, but also has a special contract with a "société de portage salarial".

the freelancer finds his own clients (like any freelancer), BUT the contracts are between those clients and "the société de portage salarial" .
the clients pay the "the société de portage salarial", wich
takes care about payments and so on. a part of the money
pays the "the société de portage salarial" for its services
towards teh freelancer , and pays the social taxes any salary has to pay when working in a firm.

so, the freelancer is really paid by the "société de portage salarial".

i am not quite happy and satisfied with the answer, because:
1) it is an English term and not a German one
2) "Umbrella" has a sort of negative meaning, so as if the person using an "umbrelle company" had something to hide,
which is of course not the case...
