Ich bin mir nicht sicher, wie "le retard à l'école" in diesem Zusammenhang gemeint ist.

Ist hier gemeint, dass der Junge...
...meistens zu spät in die Schule kam (arriver en retard à l'école) oder
...dass er mit seinen schulischen Leistungen im Rückstand war (retard scolaire)?

Da er vorher sowohl den langen Schulweg als auch seine Schulschwierigkeiten anspricht, würde vom Kontext her beides passen - und der Autor springt auch sonst gerne von einem Thema zum anderen...

Hier der Kontext (es handelt sich um Kindheitserinnerungen aus Burkina Faso):
"Mon seul souci était de mener à bien mes études. Ma première année à l’école fut plutôt effroyable. Je doublais cette année-là.
Je ne perdis pas pour autant mon courage. En fait, je n’avais que très peu de temps après l’école. En effet, je devais me lever de bonne heure pour aller à la recherche de l’eau ou du bois de chauffe. Je faisais un parcours (aller - retour) d’environ quatorze kilomètres par jour, à pied, pour rejoindre les bancs de ma classe. **Le retard à l’école** était devenu habituel et il me fallait oublier la possibilité de m’amuser avec mes copains."
