Qui andrei di letterale senza alcun dubbio.
Lascerei appositamente il verbo "fare" che a mio avviso è importante qui, pari pari come in francese.
"Fa" sta per "conferisce importanza/significato/la fa esistere/ne suggella la bellezza/etc."
Cioè Duchamp non era d'accordo con la tesi secondo cui l'opera d'arte esiste e ha un senso in funzione di/dipende da chi la guarda/osserva.
Secondo lui invece l'opera d'arte, in questo caso la musica, prescinde dall'osservatore/ascoltatore, di cui diffida, come dice il tuo testo. |

Explanation:
Secondo me quel "qui fait le tableau" indica che l'osservatore, in qualche modo, "costruisce" il quadro stesso, ossia se ne fa una certa idea, idea che poi a Duchamp non va sempre a genio. Stessa cosa per chi ascolta la musica.
