en Francia la Licence equivale a la diplomatura en español y la maîtrise a la Licenciatura

El sistema francés, antes de la reforma LMD, se dividía en ciclos:
- 1er cycle : DEUG (dos años de estudios). Se le llamaba BAC+1 o BAC+2 dado que se obtenía después de 1 ó 2 años de haber pasado el BAC )Bachillerato francés)
- 2e cycle : Licence (que no equivale a la Licenciatura en español) se obtenía al tercer año de estudios, y a diferencia de la Licenciatura, no requería una tesina, y Maîtrise (equivalente a la Licenciatura de los países hispanohablantes, se obtenía tras la presentación de una tesina). En francés se le llamaba BAC+3 o BAC+4 (se obtenían después de 3 ó 4 años de haber pasado el BAC)
- 3e cycle : DEA o DESS. Esto equivaldría al Master hispanohablante (en Francia se hablaba de BAC+5, pues se obtenían después de 5 años de estudios y una tesina). Luego del DEA se hacía el Doctorat (Doctorado)
