Es en lenguaje figurado, es en el sentido que la barba ha "invadido" su rostro pero como es una barba que está todavía rala no se podría utilizar el verbo invadir, es más adecuado "tomar" que es más neutro.

La opción:
...el rostro..."escondido, oculto" detrás de una barba...", "disimulado" es la que da Le Petit Robert y sería la interpretación de analeonor ( y en mi agree no puedo extenderme, asique lo coloco aquí:
Faire disparaître en recouvrant, en débordant. Þ 1. cacher, dissimuler. Un monsieur « au visage mangé de barbe grise » (Courteline). « Ses yeux étonnés mangeaient l'étroit visage » (Montherlant).

La mía ("consumido por") es simplemente otra idea, una opción más para que elijas, aunque creo que no te va a resultar fácil ya que han dado muchas y buenas.
