Er dient als Halterung für die Gießpfannen (Gewicht bis 300t). Mit Hilfe des Pfannendrehturms werden die Gießpfannen abwechselnd in Gieß- bzw. Beladungsposition gedreht. Diese Funktion gewährleistet den kontinuierlichen Betrieb der Stranggießanlage. Während die eine Pfanne ausgegossen wird, wird die zweite Seite durch eine volle Pfanne ersetzt. Die Lager im Pfannendrehturm erreichen trotz großer Kräfte und hoher Momente Standzeiten von mehr als 10 Jahren. Eingesetzt werden Zylinderrollenlager und Axial-Pendelrollenlager mit Durchmessern von mehr als 1000 mm und Elges Gelenklager. A budući da je Stranggieß = bezdani lijev: Bezdani lijev. Moderni postupak kod kojeg se sirovi čelik u tekućem stanju kontinuirano lijeva u velikeploče koje se potom izrezuju u manje komade.
