Comes up in a PR blurb about how wonderful it is to live and study in a certain town, the underlying idea being that there are lots of international students who come to learn, then return to their home countries and invent sliced bread there.

It is very clunky in the GER, so I would go for something rather different, but hopefully with an approximately similar meaning.

In a sense I agree with Helen Shiner - one should try to avoid a 'literal' translation here by all means.


By the way, 'global village' is an exceedingly popular term (28 million google hits!)
