or maybe `trials´ or `tribulations´ of life. I just might be going off on a tangent here, but, if they are implying that "erlebnis" is for all that can happen to one - both good and bad - and these things are all in some way connected with each other, sequentially, like the links in a chain, it just might work.

It would be useful to have a tad more context.
