German to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Aerospace / Aviation / Space / Checkpoints Region (source): Region (target): English (United Kingdom) | | German term or phrase: Heimannbögen | | These will be used during next year's football World Cup to check spectators for the usual stuff (guns, missiles, rocket launch pads) ;-) They are the exact same thing as one goes through at the airport but I have no idea what they are actually called. These must be distinguished from the x-ray machines that the bags/luggage goes through. |
| | | metal detectors | Explanation: I found only two hits: one for Heimannbögen, one for Heimann-Bogen. The latter says:

This would indicate that it is simply a metal detector. If you need to state a specific kind, I would call it a "walk-through metal detector".

If it isn't entirely clear what the device will be detecting, perhaps just call it a "walk-through detector"

If it will clearly be used to check for explosives only (doesn't seem likely here ...), the new-generation detectors are commonly called "puffer machines", also found in the link above |

52 mins confidence: | Heimannbögen explanation below
Explanation: The company that makes these things is called Smiths Heimann. The website is below. I assume from the website that the detection system you walk through is called a "portal"
An official term for Heimannbögen I haven't found yet.
This information might help you further though.

In this press release from Smiths it is called a "explosive detection walk-through (trace) portal"
"This system is a significant upgrade to existing passenger checkpoints. It offers high throughput and a very high sensitivity," said Bill Mawer, President Smiths Detection North America. "We are pleased to participate in these trials that have begun ahead of the Super Bowl."
...which shows that it is being tested for use during the Super Bowl in the States, and to prove my "portal" point.
