Bevor die Differentialgleichungen aufgestellt werden, ist es in der Flugmechanik und Flugregelungstechnik üblich, gewisse Vereinfachungen vorauszusetzen. Die wichtigsten Vereinfachungen lauten nach [4]:
1. Die Erde wird als Inertialsystem betrachtet, d.h. als eben und ruhend.
2. Das Flugzeug wird als starrer Körper angenommen, elastische Freiheitsgrade von Flügel, Rumpf und Leitwerk werden vernachlässigt.
3. Das Flugzeug ist bezüglich seiner x-z-Ebene symmetrisch, damit verschwinden die Deviationsmomente Ixy und Iyz.
4. Der Drall der rotierenden Triebwerke wird vernachlässigt. Bei kleinen *schubstarken* Flugzeugen, kann diese Vereinfachung zu ungenauen Ergebnissen führen (Kreiselkopplungen.
