German term or phrase: Simmer
ein altes Maßeinheit ein "Simmer" = ca 236ml aber was ist es in Englisch??

Simmer, altes Hohlmaß (Trockenmaß); in Hessen: 1 Simmer = 32 l; in Frankfurt am Main: = 28,68 l; in Württemberg: = 22,153 l.

So it sounds like it was all over the place, and it does not sound like it was used in the English-speaking world.

Asker: I also found that it was apparently a different measure in different regions - so maybe the best to just put "Simmer" (old measuring unit)....what do you think?

agree  Teresa Reinhardt: This applies to most old measures (Elle etc.) depending on CONTEXT, I'd leave it and add (approx. 20-30 pints) or whatever units you're uisng
