"Südtirol gilt als das größte geschlossene Obstanbaugebiet der Welt und als ein bedeutendes Weinanbaugebiet."

I'm not really sure what's meant by "geschlossen" here. My best guesses get either no hits or only hits on German Web sites. TIA for your help.

Another suggestion. I think the idea is that the fruit-growing region/area is continuous, uninterrupted, unbroken, etc.

At the time, the region was home to the largest continuous area of fruit orchards in the world, 60 square miles of six thousand small, independent farms, mostly family owned.
