In the cabbage production I've dealt with in row spacings and between row spacings are pretty standard. I guess you would have to harvest them sooner if they were planted closer together because as Jacinda says the yield would be lower for the reasons she said.

Well, that's what the sentence says, probably the yield is higher with higher crop densities when it is harvested early, however, if the crop were to be harvested later, the yield may be lower due to poorer plant development and/or increased disease/pests due to higher crop density...

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I would be more inclined to use crop density because the text in question is intended for people who don't necessarily know much about agriculture, and I'm not sure if stand density would be understood by all readers. However, am I correct in understanding that the closer the cabbages are planted, the earlier they are harvested?
