German to English translations [PRO]
Marketing - Architecture / Hotel Brochure
German term or phrase: Trichterfenster
"Auch die Eingangstüre und die zur Arvenstube führenden Trichterfenster erinnern noch an das alte ABC Bauernhaus."

From a Swiss hotel brochure. The hotel seems to be some sort of converted farmhouse. Anyway, I have no idea whatsoever what a "Trichterfenster" is. Obviously, it's a window of some sort, but the Trichter part has got me completely beat. Cone or funnel-shaped windows??? TIA for your help.

English translation:funnel window
Explanation:
German word is descriptive, technical term, dating to 13th century buildings in the greater Alpine region. Trichterfenster are set deep into outside walls, with the outer rim or wall opening several times the diametre of the actual window (pane). Also used in modern, state-of-that-art houses, because of excellent insulation qualities, taking in light and warmth, but not passing heat to the outside.

tapered window

Explanation:
The word tapered is often used in medieval architecture to describe the shape of windows, doors, arrow slits and other openings. It refers to the way in which the thick wall tapers inwards to the narrower/smaller window or opening.

To help you visualise what is meant here, a photo of tapered windows and entrances in a Swiss station building can be found on page 9 of my second web ref.
