German to English translations [PRO]
Architecture / Historical; church architecture
German term or phrase: Spannfundamente
The Hildesheim cathedral is being renovated and they have discovered the foundations of the original chapel built by Louis the Pious.

The following extract from a press release detailing the findings and is about how the chapel grew into the cathedral it is today.

------
------

I've looked up the term "Spannfundament" and I think I vaguely understand what is meant, the thing is I could also very easily translate it totally wrong and turn the description into something totally new!

As far as I understand, Bishop Altfrid wanted to vault the roof of the crypt and had to use "Spannfundamente" for the piers and pillars of the groin vault. I'm guessing this is some sort of supporting structure but I could be completely wrong!

Where is Ken Follett when you need him!? ;-)
