Here's my translation such as it is:

Works of a religious nature comprise a large part of Hans Fronius’ oeuvres. In the last few years of his life the artist, deceased 1988, particularly dedicated himself to this theme. Fronius’ works are designed based on an extensive knowledge of the traditions of Christian image iconography, which always present these ?representation traditions? as a personal question on human existence of the respective actor/actors. Each person is presented ?in their questionable existence – integrated in comprehensive/broadx Rückbindung possibilities (hence “religion” in its direct literal sense).
Hans Fronius however seeks a Rückbindung that is deeply rooted in people, not one that moves away high above him. Only in commitment to the depths of man and particularly to man’s abysses sees the artist the possible effectiveness of comprehensive/broadx Rückbindung. Only through such a commitment can a principle of ethics also develop and be able to hold its ground. Only based on this can hopes for further reaching Rückbindungen be envisioned.

Explanation:
I think what is meant is an identification with real people - flawed people and not angels or cherubs, so that the "evangelism" of the paintings will be effective.

agree  Stephen Reader: Rückbindung seems to be esp. prevalent in ethical/relig. considerations - "religio = Rückbindung" - @ David, try googling the term. Depending on further context, even 'integration' possible.

agree  Henry Schroeder: w/ Robin and Stephen, only, David, grammatically, I would write: only in the commitment to the depths of man and particularly to man's abysses DOES the artist see the possible... this is a case of verb inversion due to "only"
