German to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / 17th century picture framing styles
German term or phrase:Aufsatzbekrönung
I'm struggling with texts for the Nikolaikirche musuem guide in Berlin, these have to be sand-blasted on glass pillars so need to be 100% on the nail! Aufsatzbekrönung, as far as I can gather, is the ornamentation on top of a pictorial epitaph, often carved out of wood - but what is it called in English?

Wyatt also made a rich gilt composition frame, surmounted by a crown, with a bishop's mitre below, for an engraving of Hoppner's Dr William Markham which was a gift from George IV to Lady Mansfield (Christie's 24 May 2007, Scone Palace and Blairquhan sale, lot 387).
Hi Helen - as I explained in the other thread, that's all I have! It's a list of phrases to be engraved on a glass pillar in a museum! Aufsatzbekrönung vom Bildepitaph für Johann von Kötteritz. 1534 - 12.1.1609. Kurfürstlicher Rat, und seine Ehefrau Caritas, geb. Distelmeyer 23.7.1554 - 1615....crown surmount sounds very good, actually. I'll wait and see if this extra info is useful for you, otherwise I think you may have found the solution. Thanks
