Ok, I now understand what you are saying, sorry if it took me some time! In fairness we haven't been asked to translate that part of the sentence. Maybe Claire will go a little wild and say something like 'cheek by jowl' and then speak about juxtapositions?!

I fully agree with using juxtaposition and of course because it also conveys the element of wechselspiel, no misunderstanding there. My problem I guess is more with the German sentence and I wouldnt be too happy with
"placed in close proximity to the very latest contemporary artists - surprising juxtapositions included"
but I guess thats the original (artists - not their works?)

The aim is to find something that works well in English. I am aware that it is not a literal translation, of course. Nonetheless, it does convey what is meant - i.e. that the works confronting one another will play off each other. To reduce the meaning to merely placing side by side is a rather simplistic understanding of the term in such a context.

I dont mean that juxtaposition needs explaining in the text, just would be careful with the wording/word order as juxtaposition in itself does not mean wechselspiel ;)
