German term or phrase: Wechselspiele
"Die Präsentation der antiken Statuen, der assyrischen Fresken, der barocken Porträts, Urnen, Vasen und Pokale erfolgt immer noch dicht an dicht auf depotähnlichen Regalen, spärlich mit Lichtstrahlern aus dem Dunkel geholt und vor allem: In direkter Nachbarschaft zu den allerjüngsten Gegenwartkünstlern – *überraschende Wechselspiele eingeschlossen*. "

I'm having difficulties with the end of this sentence - it's the final sentence of an article about an art museum for a tourist magazine so it should be snappy. Here's my (not very snappy) attempt so far:

Antique statues, Assyrian frescoes, baroque portraits, urns, vases and trophies are packed closely together on warehouse-like shelves, lit sparsely with spotlights, and, most importantly, placed in close proximity to the very latest contemporary artists, *surprising confrontations included*.

I'd appreciate any good ideas!

agree  lexispro: The sense of contrasting items placed in close proximity create a surprising ("surprising" because they do not belong naturally together) interplay (they "talk" to each other), rather than create the expected contrast or juxtaposition.

agree  anne pincus: I'm with lexispro, and I think this sounds good at the end of the sentence, except it would probably be then 'making for...'

agree  Andrew Swift: Yes. I was just googling "startling juxtapositions" myself to see how that panned out: 11,700.
1 min
-> Yes, just worrying about the rather turgid 'surprising' - something more interesting could be used and your 'startling' is good.
