German to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / unofficial art gallery terminology
German term or phrase: die Warliste
This is a quotation from a German conceptual artist circa 1968, commenting on how commercial the American art scene has become. In particular, the attitude of galleries looking to sign up artists:

‘Wir können Sie auf die Warliste setzen’ durfte als neue Höflichkeitsform gewertet werden für das frühere ‘Es wäre uns ein Vergnügen, Ihnen das Atelier des Künstlers zu zeigen’.

Has anyone heard of a "war list" used to mean something like "we can put you on our books/on our list/welcome you to our stable/make you one of our artists?

agree  Stephen Reader: Can't think of anything more likely; but - Alison? - without more detailed context, the orig. seems odd in the switch of focus from potential buyer to potential gall. artist (or is that the point?) /Best, S.
