German to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
German term or phrase: Kojenlandschaft
Context:

"Beruhigte Kojenlandschaft
Ob Malerei oder Bildhauerei, ob Zeichnung, Druckgrafik, Multiples oder Fotografie: auf 35.000 qm Ausstellungsfläche entsteht eine klar strukturierte, architektonisch anmutende „Kunstlandschaft“, die zu intensivem Sehen, konzentrierter Auseinandersetzung und entspanntem Einkauf einlädt. "

This is in connection with a trade fair, but the relevance of Kojen here escapes me.

* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: Website
* Target audience: Trade fair exhibitors and visitors
* Country and dialect (source): German
* Country and dialect (target): British English

Explanation:
Okay, so what do the experts think?

I picture a large exhibition hall with wide gangways and aisles where the visitors can take their time reviewing the paintings they might decide to buy. There are possibly extensive seating arrangements there too; after all, you don't necessarily want to spend good money on buying a picture on the spur of the monument - errr... moment - unless you have a good idea you'll still like it in fifty years time, do you? So it would be as well to be able to take your time over your decision.

By the way, it doesn't look as if google is too familiar with the word either, but it's one of those words of which I think anyone would understand the meaning, given the context.

"see and collect" special landscape of art (in a relaxed atmosphere)

Explanation:
See and collect: art KARLSRUHE 2012 in preparation
www.art-karlsruhe.de/messe-karlsruhe-art/en/.../pressedetai...
"In the coming year we want to stage an art KARLSRUHE that bears the visitors and collectors in mind in particular,” says Schrade, whose plans include a number of sculpture zones with wide aisles between the exhibitors’ booths, for example, as well as rest areas to ensure a ***relaxed atmosphere “to enable the art itself to be perceived with a maximum of concentration".
Under the motto of “see and collect”, a ***special landscape of art*** is being created*** on an exhibition area of roughly 35,000 m² in four halls to encourage intensive examination and pleasant shopping.

Die Messe - art KARLSRUHE
www.art-karlsruhe.de/.../zufriedene_aussteller_und...

Asker: @Helen: No translation should ever make the reader cringe, unless that was the original author's intention, should it?

disagree  Kim Metzger: That might work for Kunstlandschaft but the question is how to translate Kojenlandschaft.

agree  Helen Shiner: Seems to be spot on to me - not a great turn of phrase, but if this is what is being used locally, however much native EN speakers might cringe, I guess one has to go with it.

neutral  Stephen Reader: Think orig. screams nach rewrite (along lines of '...in this year's vastly less cluttered groundplan, making each bay / stand a visit in its own right...') . Your info find looks v. useful - relaxation etc. W/Helen re. turn-o-ph. & w/you re. cringing!

agree  Bernhard Sulzer: clever, short, and to the point; as long as it's not an "equestrian" standscape - see http://jayperryaughrt.deviantart.com/art/Equestrian-Standsca...
6 hrs

agree  Stephen Reader: w/your evocation totally. W/ 'standscape' for an openly witty headline, cos far more artificial than the -landschaft suffix in Ger. (not 'Tranquil standscape' though! - Some other elegant phrasing)

less-structured presentation space (areas)

Explanation:
or, for that matter, less-structured booth/stand space (-scape)

I guess it all depends on how comfortable and intimate you/the client wants it to sound. But the word "beruhigt" inspired me to the following suggestion:
Breaking up/Break-up of the traditional/monotone series/line-up of stands/booths
So, I don't believe the problem is the word "Kojenlandschaft" - that's just the booths/stands lined up next to each other - intimate or not.
Granted, "Koje" can mean comfortable/self-contained station etc.
but I believe it's used in German mainly for presentation/exhibition booth per se.

So here the emphasis is IMO on a more relaxed/less-structured organisation/structure/configuration of the presentation area/units/modules/bays ...

http://www.kunstmarkt.com/pagesmag/kunst/_id220344-/marktber...

Rewrite

Explanation:
If author / exh'n mgmt'll take it, would go for thorough re-write, e.g. (heading) 'Time and Space' /(body-txt)... 'have mercifully been built into this year's stand layout (or: 'ground plan for the stands') at the ....Fair. This with doff of hat to David M.'s scene-setting.

-- What do thesauruses yield between 'navigable' and 'meaningful' (intelligible) for the presumably improved layout?

Asker: Thanks Stephen, but knowing my clinet, I think David's neologism is probably more acceptable than a rewrite, even if that would really be preferable.
