Travertintafel = travertine plate, travertine panel Explanation: travertine is a kind of limestone deposit in creeks, which seems here to be used as a carrier of an inscription. The "Tafel" depends very much on the shape an purpose, but you cannot go wrong with plate or panel Duden Fremdwrterbuch |

travertin plaque Explanation: travertin is a calcareous rock, mainly found in italy, often used instead of marble, softer than marble and therefore easier to carve. Please have a look at www.enc.dk/uk/marmor/traverti.htm and you'll see that travertin is not marbled like marble, not as beautiful. Meyers Lexikon says: Travertin (ital) 'Kalksinterabsatz kohlensäurehaltiger Quellwässer'; geschätzt als Werkstein. Would you like to translate this for me? Have fun! ;) as above |
