Ihr augen fol von gluht! was gluht? karfunkel-strahlen:
auch nicht! si sein ein bliz / dehr durch di lüfte sprüht
und sich aus ihrem aug / bis in di meinen züht.
nicht blizze; bolzen sein's / damit si pflägt zu prahlen /
damit si pflägt den zol der libe bahr zu zahlen.
nicht bolzen; sonnen sein's / damit si sich bemüht
zu bländen andrer lücht; di keiner ihmahls siht /
der nicht gestrahft mus sein. nicht sonnen; stärne tahlen /
vom himmel ihrer stirn': auch nicht: was säh ich schimmern /
dan gluht ist nicht so feucht / karfunkel strahlt nicht so /
der bliz hat minder kraft / der pfeil macht jah nicht fro /
die sonn' ist nicht so stark / ein stärn kan nicht so glimmern /
wahr-um dan sihet sie däs Folkes aber-wahn
fohr gluht / karfunkel / bliz / pfeil-son- und stärnen ahn?

Explanation:


His lover’s eyes

Her eyes like embers glow / What glows? / Ruby-rays
They’re not / It is a thunderbolt / It sprays through the air
And from her eye to mine/ not lightning / thunderbolts they are/ with that she likes to boast
With that she pays in cash the price of love
Not thunderbolts; it’s the shining sun
With it she tries to blind the others’ light
For none to ever see / who must not be chastised
Stars shine from the height of the sky / they are not what I see glimmer
They don’t glow so dewy / ruby-rays are not so bright
The thunderbolt holds less power / the strike does not gladden
The sun is not so strong / a star shimmer so
Why then does she look to the peoples’ madness
Before embers / rubies / lightning strikes and stars?
