In the engineering sense, 'abfragen' can be translated as scan, query, poll, interrogate, etc., depending on the context As the Kugelabfrage apparently includes of an X-Y transport and a Heidenhain gauge unit, it must be more sophisticated than a just a simple probe or gauge.
