I'd be grateful for any help with the meaning of "Reibkohle" in the following paragraph:

"Bei dem erfindungsgemässen Verfahren für den Betrieb der Bremsanlage eines Anhängerfahrzeuges wird daher durch eine gezielte Ansteuerung der Bremsen der einzelnen Achsen im Teillastbereich nur jeweils eine dieser Achsen für die Bremsarbeit herangezogen. Dies führt zu einer höheren spezifischen Beanspruchung der betreffenden Bremse mit der Folge einer erhöhten Bildung von Reibkohle im Bereich der Bremsbeläge sowie ferner mit der Folge einer deutlichen Verminderung der Neigung zur Verglasung."

It's as literal as that; it's a layer which develops while the brake pad/lining is "running-in", provided it reaches the necessary heat, which is why the two-axle trailer uses only one axle at a time for braking, to develop the more efficient braking layer more quickly.
