German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Automotive / Cars & Trucks
German term or phrase: Knickmaß
this is the driver's legroom, from the acceleration pedal to the backrest of the driver's seat and measured to include the bend of the knee (hence "Knick"): but is there a more exact and succinct way to say this in English than "driver's legroom"?

hints and help from those who deal with automotive texts more often than I do, are welcome!

Front legroom/ front-seat legroom

Explanation:
I would go with front legroom which highlights the fact that you are referring to the distance between the acceleration pedal and the backrest of the driver's seat as opposed to the more general legroom or leg space.

I found this definition of front legroom on http://www.iseecars.com/cars/automatic-transmission-cars-wit... :
"Front or driver leg room is measured as the distance from the footwell or where the driver's heel is when resting on the accelerator pedal to the seatback."

The front legroom is measured differently to the rear legroom which is the horizontal distance between the front edge of the rear seat and front seatback.

You will also notice the use of front legroom and rear legroom on many car specifications to distinguish between legroom/ leg space in the drivers seat or the passenger seats.

Example sentence(s):
  • Sedans combine generous amounts of front and rear legroom. However there is normally a trade-off between front and rear legroom in your average compact car.
  • The new car has a wheelbase 105mm longer than the outgoing 156, significantly improving both front and rear passenger legroom.
