The fact that the superabsorber swells and "strafft auf molekularer Ebene" when penetrated by water is of benefit to the prestressing action which is required. "Straffen" usually means to tighten, stretch or become taut but I am not sure what would be appropriate along with the "auf molekularer Ebene".
