DEHYDRATION
A. Purpose
The purpose of dehydration agents is to remove water from tissues so that they can be infiltrated with the most widely used embedding media that are typically immiscible with water. Dehydration is also important for the preparation of materials for scanning electron microscopy, removing water from the specimen, and typically replacing it with ethanol, which then can be exchanged with liquid carbon dioxide during the critical-point drying process.
