I suspect this means something along the lines of

Asker: Thanks. This does indeed sound very plausible, but in this instance the "biological data" is actually a film of the fishes motion, so it doesn't seem very biological to me. Surely "the real life data" or "the real fish" (depending on the context), as opposed to "the simulation", would work, wouldn't it?

Come to think of it, a sample/specimen is a part, isn't it? A part that is representative of the whole.
