German to English translations [PRO] Science - Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) / genetics/genotypes | | German term or phrase: Ansatz | My question has to do with the meaning of "Ansatz" in this sentence (are there missing words?):
P erklärte, dass Kompartimentierung bedeute, dass ein großer Ansatz räumlich voneinander getrennt werde.
Here is the full paragraph (the topic has to do with a lawsuit about a patent on a method for initiating mutagenesis in organic molecules and the role of compartmentalization in that method):
P führte an, dass in X nicht von Optimierung gesprochen werde. P gab ferner an, dass X eine andere Art der Kompartimentierung benutze. Im Unterschied zu D3 seien patentgemäß alle Mutanten bei der Kompartimentierung vorhanden. Ziel bei X sei eine Vereinzelung der Genotypen. P erklärte, dass Kompartimentierung bedeute, dass ein großer Ansatz räumlich voneinander getrennt werde.

| | Clarification request(s) and responseChristine Lam: 12:36am Dec 16, 2004: something could well be missing and the Ansatz bit could then read something like separated to a large extent - Erik Macki (asker): 2:27am Dec 16, 2004: This is a good option, as is Trudy's "batch" proposal. What's bugging me is that "voneinander" would normally have a plural antecedent, and in this case "Ansatz" (its apparent antecedent if there are no missing words) is singular. Perhaps "Ansatz" is meant to be taken as a collective here and "voneinander" is OK. Is anyone else's ear bugged by "voneinander" here? Anne Schulz: 7:17am Dec 16, 2004: So is mine, definitively. There is no reasonable possibility for "Ansatz" to be a plural or collective. Why don't you ask your client, whether this should read "ein großer Ansatz räumlich aufgetrennt werde". -

| | batch | Explanation: Batch is alright for Ansatz. Could the sentence be translated as "...a large batch be spatially isolated..." since that "voneinander" seems to be problematic? |
