Clarification request(s) and response
Poj (asker): 6:38pm Jul 29, 2004: It is the text about gardening. Nothing specific, I think.
Here's the context:
Für Farbtupfer sorgt die Schachbrettblume, deren purpurfarbene Glöckchen wirklich kariert sind - sie wird ebenfalls mit der Zwiebel verkauft und kann später ausgepflanzt werden.

sylvie malich: 9:18am Jul 30, 2004: According to your original text Glöckchen is in fact a description of the flowers of the Schachbrettblume. -

bell-like flower
Explanation:
I'm thinking that this is more the bell-like flower of the plant and not the name of the plant itself. I can't find "Glöckchen" in any plantcare websites online. Glöckchen comes up only in the descriptions.

agree Armorel Young: What's the context, Poj? Are you hoping for a specific scientific name or just an evocative description, as in a literary context? You could use bellflower if you think it's a plant of the Campanula family (which would be a Glockenblume).

bell-shaped flower

Explanation:
There are many kinds of flowers with the description of "Glöckchen" in their name. If you are not looking for a more specific plant, bell-shaped flower would work well, otherwise you will have to give us the complete name, either botanical or common.

Taken straight from one of my 50 + gardening books:
Fritillaria melagris - checkered lily
A charming bulb with narrow leaves and nodding, bell-shaped,
checked flowers on slender stems in spring. It thrives in moist grass or planted beneath shrubs.
If you check on German sites under Schachbrettblume + botanischer Name, you will come up with Fritillaria melagris.
Hope this helps

agree Trudy Peters: Yes. The plant is the Schachbrettblume, and Glöckchen just describes the shape of the blossoms. Maybe "bell-shaped blossoms?"

bell shaped flowers

Explanation:
Poj, could give us a bit more of the context. Is it a specific plant?Glöckchen belong to the family of the Liliaceae (Liliengewächse). But if you are referring to a specific plant like the Maiglöckchen, then its English common name is Lily of the Valley; if you are referring to the Schneeglöckchen, it's English common name is Snowdrop.

--------------------------------------------------

Lily of the Valley will tolerate dry conditions after blooming but the foliage will die back. Constant moisture will keep the plants green throughout the growing season. They prefer shade and will grow in most soil types. Fragrant ***bell shaped flowers*** are followed by glossy red berries.

Now I am very sure it\'s bell-shaped flowers (with or without hyphen.
