VAT ID number in trade within the EU
This is not a turnover tax number, it's a Value Added Tax (Umsatz-Steuer) IDentity Number in trade between EU countries.
In contemporary language it's most often called 'VAT number'.
VAT, first implemented by France in the early 60s is an indirect tax, now used in all EU countries and being carried by the end consumer. All pre-consumption levels of production can deduct the VAT being invoiced to them.
In export business the VAT does not have to be invoiced IF the recipient is a foreign VAT registered company WITHIN the EU and IF the exporter on his invoice cites the VAT ID Number of the recipient. This number always start with the 2-letter ISO country code (DE,FR,GB,IE,IT,GR,AT,ES,PT,LU,BE,NL,DK,SE,FI), followed by the country's VAT number for the company in question.
