farmers OR farm owners Explanation: It's clear from even that context that farmers are meant. There's one distinction here that dictionaries don't clarify but the people in Germany definitely know. A Bauer does not mean, as the dictionary says, a peasant. A Bauer is somebody special. He owns the farm. The hired men are not Bauern. A peasant may be a very small Bauer if he owns a bit of land. Since farmer means almost exactly the same, it is good to use. |
