Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general)
German term or phrase: "Aliud," see below
The entire quote is:
„Auch künftig werden die Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken und deren mittelständische Firmenkunden im Mittelpunkt unserer Arbeit stehen. Dabei orientieren wir uns weiterhin an den Prinzipien der Subsidiarität und der Dezentralität. Dieses Aliud sollten wir uns auch zukünftig erhalten, um als genossenschaftliche Gruppe im Wettbewerb unverwechselbar zu bleiben."
I'm not sure what is meant by "Aliud" here. I realize that "Aliud" can mean a "Falschlieferung," when a customer or contractual partner is mistakenly supplied with something s/he didn't order. But that makes no sense here and the "uns . . . erhalten" is also throwing me off.
difference / advantage
Aliud originally means different and took on the meaning 'Falschlieferung' in a German legal sense. Aliud here is referring to the characteristics that differentiate the company from others and thus give it the competitive edge which they want to keep in the future.

I agree with "dierk" ([dierk] 2000-06-04 12:51:11). Let me add that ALIUD is originally Latin (a neuter gender there, also adopted in the German loan), which goes a long way toward improving both one's English and one's German.
