As a result of which one has to decide if ... or ... Explanation: Wobei es zu Unterscheiden gilt ob ... = As a result of which one has to decide if ... or ... The previous sentence was probably a statement about something that on its turn again causes another question? Knowledge of German, and my American husband. |

valve face vs. the entire valve, espec. the packing Explanation: The distinction is made between testing the tightness of the valve face (or valve seat) and testing the tightness of the entire valve, espec. the stuffing or packing (or seal or gasket). Ernst Deutsch-Englisch : Ventilsitz m (am Ventil), Ventildichtungsfläche f (Masch) / valve face Ernst Deutsch-Englisch : Ventilsitz m (im Zylinderkopf) (Mot) / valve seat Ernst Deutsch-Englisch : Ventilsitzdichtung f / seat seal Ernst Deutsch-Englisch : Packung f, Dichtung f / stuffing, packing Ernst Deutsch-Englisch : Packungsring m, -scheibe f / packing ring o. disk o. washer, gasket Hope this helps! OR... Whereby one has to determine if ... or ... Explanation: Same thing... As you can see we're still discussing this :) Sorry for giving you two answers, it's also context dependant. I'd go for this one, it makes more sense regarding the rest of the sentence. |

Whereby it must be differenciated whether.....or... Explanation: I think it basically means you have to see whether the valve itself has some defect that makes it leak, or whether it is only the packing or seal which needs replacement. Good luck! |

At this point ....... Explanation: I think you problem might be the fact that the sentence starts with "Wobei", because there is nothing for it to relate to. I am almost certain that it qualifies the preceding sentence, although in that case the two should only have been separated with a comma, not a full stop. Since you have not provided the preceding sentence, it is hard to say what would be the best translation of "wobei". I do feel, however, that although replacing the full stop with a comma is a possibility, you should keep the full stop, because I suspect that the reason for the full stop is that the author felt the sentence would otherwise be too long. What would be best way of rendering "wobei" is hard to say not knowing what comes before. Here are a few suggestions: "In this connection", "At this point", "Here" ... Here is my suggestion for the whole sentence: Here [or similar, see above] it is important to decide / determine which should be tested, the tightness of the valve seat or the tightness of the entire valve, particularly the tightness of the gasket. I hope this is useful. |
