German to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Human Resources
German term or phrase: Diplom-Kaufmann / Diplom-Betriebswirt
Context - CV's on web, therefore it doesn't have to say something like MA 'equivalent'...

I know this question has come up before. I would be interested in knowing (again) whether people think 'masters in...'(in brackets after German) is more-or-less accurate
how I can distinguish between the two

don't translate

I wouldn't translate them but leave them in German if the CV gives more details about the different modules taken during the university course.

See for example:
Teodor C. Tan, the Asian Canadian Diplom Kaufmann, studied Business Administration at the University of Kiel and Computer Science at the Technical University in Berlin. I have been learning German, Svenska and Danish since 1980. Now on the way to being a CF Expert

However, Eurodicautom, translates
Betriebswirt as "business economist".

Be carefull with "Diplom". In Britain, you can get a diploma after 1-2 years at college which has nothing to do with a uni degree.

For a differentiation, see:
The Program leads to the degree of Diplom-Betriebswirt after 4 years or to the degree of Diplom-Kaufmann (MBA equivalent) after 5 years.

The user of "Master" is not justified in all cases in which "Diplom" appears, but generally this may be called a certificate or qualification. Sometimes it involves a non-degree field of study. You need to have seen the rest of the educational background on the CV to judge, since even for Education Ministries, this sort of decision is a headache (they prefer counting credits).

degree in business administration

The German "Dipl. Betriebswirt" is gained after studying at a German "Universität" or "Fachhochschule" for a certain number of semesters. The qualification "Dipl. Kaufmann" is also a degree in business administration but requires a longer study period than "Betriebswirt" and is only offered by "proper" universities.
