amount used in production / amount returned to production

Not knowing what industry this is makes it kind of hard to tell exactly what they mean. I imagine, for example that they could be making dough, and they have a certain amount of ingredients that they put into the front of the production line. Some of the finished dough gets sold, the rest gets put back into the production line somehow.

Or they could be talking about finances.

Could you get me some more context? I'm in Germany, so there may be a time difference.
