But I think you'd have to rephrase it a bit ... you can't say 'our expertise is' or 'our skills are products'

You'd have to say something like:

Our key skills lie in the production/sale/distribution (delete as approprate) of bla bla bla products.

Explanation:
I had a software crash right in the middle of my answer, so it looks that I am late, but core competence is correct! There is even a company that calls itself so. The German word definitely came from the original English word!
