German to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general)
I know exactly who this is! I just don't know what to call them. This is companies like Hofer, Tschibo, Eduscho (all Austrian), Lidl, who have a few staples but an odd lot of changing articles every week. Help!!

Mixed Retailers in Austria
Variety stores constitutes the only significant mixed retailing channel, as there are no department stores, mass merchandisers or warehouse clubs in Austria.
Mixed retailers remained dominated by Tchibo Direct in 2010. The Tchibo and Eduscho brands led with an 84% value share in 2010. The term "variety stores" is used in different ways and US usage would appear to be much narrower (more often than not referring to "Poundland"-type shops) than UK usage:

Mintel last examined the UK variety stores sector in June 2003, as part of an analysis of the whole mixed goods retailing sector. Variety stores are sufficiently different to department stores to warrant a separate report. They are subject to different market conditions, being generally more price-led than the department stores, and operate on a different retail model. The UK variety stores sector contains a number of well-known UK retailers, including Marks & Spencer, considered a bellwether of the whole UK retailing industry, and Woolworths, one of the longest-established features of the UK high street. Boots the Chemists is included in the definition of variety stores for the purposes of this report, having a sufficiently diverse product range to merit inclusion, despite a recent focus back on its core health and beauty ranges. Tchibo is a German chain of coffee shops and cafés, also known for its weekly-changing range of other products. The latter includes: clothing, household items, electronics and electrical appliances. In Germany, Tchibo's slogan is "Every week a new world" (German: Jede Woche eine neue Welt); its UK slogan is "Add a little O to your life". Recently Tchibo expanded its product range, and is now selling services such as travel and insurance.
has nothing to do with surplus or big box retailers. Also please note that discounters are mentioned separately. We are talking about retailers who use a particular assortment strategy - Tschibo and Eduscho are excellent examples. In the first link I provided various strategies are explained in detail.
They are discount stores with low overhead. They are usually in cement-block, flat-roof buildings, have the cheapest of lighting, shelving and zero "interior design" and pay low wages (some scandalous, but they're working on it). They have rotating sales items, according to the season and most often the items recur each season. the brands they sell are cheap names, produced somewhere on the planet, but not clearance wares.
This sounds to me like Big Lots here in the US, which is described in Wikipedia as specializing in "closeout and overstock merchandise". You can do your regular shopping there (we do), but you never know quite what they'll be selling, and they don't sell perishables.
I haven't found a translation (and you presumably want UK English), but don't bother looking up the term itself, which gets only four hits - try Aktionssortiment instead.
