A short position is similar to a liability. In this case the derivative relates to a future or option sale of gold. If the holder requires actual physical delivery of the gold, i.e., he wants the physical gold bars, the party with the concealed position will not be able to deliver and there will be a defualt. The sentence is awkward but the subject interesting. i wonder who it is who has the hidden position?
