| | to cease renting | Explanation: This article talks about ways to lower costs for businesses, when workers can work from home, the rented office space becomes redundant, it can be 'abgemietet'.

| sublet
Explanation: This is also a guess, but could it mean sublet? IOW, we don't need this extra space anymore, but are committed to it, so we rent it out to a third party.

| vermieten, anmieten, abmieten
Explanation: Is it not in this spirit that the word should be interpreted?
anmieten = to offer for rent
abmieten = to actually rent

Thanks to Claire\'s very useful link I can now correct my own misleading thought about the word anmieten. It apparently as the same meaning as mieten.

I would like to change my entry to read:
anmieten = to rent [by the person who occupies the rented space] (in the sense of acquire)
abmieten = to rent (out) [by the person who owns the space that is rented] (in the sense of yield or give away)
