I think the author invented this, do you? Does it mean "returned to landlord"?

This article talks about ways to lower costs for businesses, when workers can work from home, the rented office space becomes redundant, it can be 'abgemietet'.

Teleworking kann also Desk Sharing als alternatives Bewirtschaftungsmodell für Büroflächen unterstützen. Im günstigsten Fall ist sogar das Abmieten frei gewordener Büroflächen möglich. Weitere Kostensenkungen ergeben sich, wenn externe Büros aufgelöst oder Telecenter in den Vororten mit günstigeren Mietpreisen eingerichtet werden.

Explanation:
This is also a guess, but could it mean sublet? IOW, we don't need this extra space anymore, but are committed to it, so we rent it out to a third party.

Explanation:
Is it not in this spirit that the word should be interpreted?

anmieten = to offer for rent
abmieten = to actually rent

Thanks to Claire\'s very useful link I can now correct my own misleading thought about the word anmieten. It apparently as the same meaning as mieten.

I would like to change my entry to read:

anmieten = to rent [by the person who occupies the rented space] (in the sense of acquire)
abmieten = to rent (out) [by the person who owns the space that is rented] (in the sense of yield or give away)

disagree  Allesklar: I've never come across "abmieten", but I know that "anmieten" is actually to rent. Maybe you thought of "anbieten"? My guess would be that "abmieten" is to stop renting.

  -> No, I was thinking more in terms of ankaufen (buy) and abkaufen (sell), rather than anbieten. I, too, am guessing.
