is that up to and including year 10, pupils are taught (in grammar schools, at least), as a class, or form, so they'll be sitting their in each subject with the same 30 odd fellow pupils. But when they get to year 11, these separate classes are 'dissolved' - depending on which subjects they've chosen for Abitur, they'll be with different fellow pupils for each subject. Hence the word 'Klasse' is no longer used, and Jahrgangsstufe is used instead.

Sorry, this translation will be in American English, and as I mentioned in the description, I *have* seen that this already existed in the glossary. I am aware that some of you find this an obvious question, however I am not familiar with the German school system from a student's perspective and it seems strange to me to refer to a class level (grade in American English as was also pointed out) as two different words depending on the number.

identical answers (I mean content-wise), with mine the way I look at it even being somewhat more explanatory, receives two agrees by British nationals just because it partially contains suggestions from UK English by a - guess what - British national when there has been no indication whatsoever of the target language variant needed, while the other is ignored just because it is US English. As if educated UK linguists were not able to understand the latter (there's no way I'm gonna be buying that).

In BE we talk about 'mark' (Note) and 'year' (Schuljahr). I think that in AE, both of these are referred to as 'grade'. In the UK education systems* we would never call a class or academic year a 'grade', though we might use this as an alternative term for 'mark'.
