The term is from a research paper on fermentation of yeast using molasses substitutes.
(Zellulosehydraten als Heferrohstoffe.)
(Beide (Pruf-)hydrolysate waren stark schweflsauer und mussten auf den fuer das Hefewachstum guenstigen pH-Wert von 4,8 abgepuffert werden

Unfortunately, reef tanks are not usually kept at those pH values, and so the buffering effect of the carbonate system is not as effective at holding pH steady as it might otherwise be.

so, what's good for the fish is good for the molasses.
